Let's Go Pens!

Younger brother Bill is taking Liam and I to the Pens' hockey game today. 1PM start time vs the Dallas Stars. Liam and I will take the "T" to downtown, the Steel Plaza Station, then meet Bill at the Mellon Arena hopefully by 12:30, that's the plan. So this is gonna be short as it's getting close to departure time.
Na Gaels finally squeezed in a rehearsal last night at Gerard's, was a good rehearsal and a good time, and we needed it as our St. Pat's Day season is just about upon us. Life is good for now.

This was begun on a Friday morning.

So I roll out of bed some couple ticks before 6AM; last night's Old Crow left a fuzzy cotton-mouth after-taste with me, nothin' that a nice easy AM run won't cure. It's dark and cloudy out, the weather man mentions rain comin'. Gotta un-plug the dishwasher from the sink, roll it over to its designated space next to the deep freezer, stick the "Clean Dishes" sign in the door so we don't 'accidentally' mix the cleansed with the un-cleansed, kinda a dishes segregation sorta thing there. Down the cellar stairs, did I mention to turn on the light a few seconds before heading down there as I installed one of those curly flourescent bulbs, not because I'm goin' "green" or anything like that, but because they lower my electric bills - it's all about me and mine on this particular issue you know. So you have to turn on the lights ahead of time because they take a few seconds to get goin' full tilt, I can live with that. Throw in a load of laundry so that I can throw it into the dryer when I get back from my run - it'll warm up the basement while I take my "Pittsburgh" shower - you know what I mean.

It's a process for me to convince myself that I want to get running this AM, especially in the dark. I know my shoes have reflectors on them, and I throw my reflector vest over my head/shoulders before plugging in my radio earplugs, then it's just me, The Steve Czaban Show, the open road, and whatever weather and traffic I encounter. Jeez, if folks weren't in some kinda hurry this morn' I was nearly run over 3 times, everyone's probably running late or something, I don't know. Good thing for me I had those reflectors on, those things light me up like a Christmas Tree against headlights. Short jog today, about 45 mins, maybe 4 miles. It always feels good when done.

Throw clothes into dryer, shower up, eat quick bowl of Cheerios, teenage daughter takes Kia to school today, her schedule's fuller than mine - she's young, she can handle. Wife drives the van, we drop off son at Elem school - picture day today, he's dressed up looks good, has to bag his gym clothes for later, sure hope he didn't forget his pants or something important.

Last night we read a note from his teacher - usually not a good thing, but in this case they're telling us that they're gonna test him in math for some advanced program of some sort. I've known for a few years now that he has a knack for numbers. So he's asking me about this test and thinking it's gonna be like those timed tests he gets in class where his teacher gives him a minute to see if he can do 25 addition problems where he always finishes in like 35-45 seconds without missing any. I say sorta like that, except some of the problems will be harder, maybe ask him about stuff he's never seen or heard of like algebra, geometry, calculus, whatever, and he looks at me sideways and asks "like what?" So I say maybe they show him a triangle with numbers on two of the three sides and ask him to figure out what the other side number is, and you have to square the numbers to figure it out, numbers like 5 and 11, and he thinks a second or two and says "You mean 25 and 121?" I'm floored, I was in high school and had those times tables memorized before I could think math that fast on my feet, he's not yet 10 and his class hasn't yet started that kind of multiplication business. For him, numbers no problem, other things he's still a knucklehead. All in all, the kids, wife, and cat are all good. All we need for now, ... is to win the lotto ...
